Adjusting to a New World
Adjusting to the New World
A city of ships rises directly from the water. Crowded with people as smokestacks continue to pour into the blue sky. Below, another population has already begun adapting: people in masks, snorkels, and fins swim over homes that have disappeared beneath the rising water.
Adjusting to the New World uses humor to address a troubling idea—the human tendency to adapt to a problem rather than confront what is causing it.
The contrast is deliberate: life underwater has become almost ordinary, yet the smokestacks above continue operating as before. The painting asks a quiet but unsettling question: How much change will we accept before we decide to change ourselves?
