Parallel Worlds – Separated by a Big Fence
Two groups of nearly identical figures inhabit opposite sides of a towering barrier, each gazing toward the same sky. They point, observe through telescopes, take notes, and watch celestial objects pass overhead. Although physically separated, they appear to be engaged in precisely the same search.
The composition makes the fence the central metaphor. It rises dramatically between the two landscapes, dividing people who seem to have far more in common than they realize. The figures wear similar clothes, use similar instruments, and share the same curiosity. Even the landscapes mirror one another.
The most intriguing detail is that the universe itself ignores the division. The moon, stars, planets, and comets occupy the open blue space around both worlds. The fence may separate the people, but it cannot divide the sky.
There is humor in the repeated little astronomers, but also a serious idea beneath it: people can create enormous boundaries between themselves while continuing to share the same hopes, questions, and world.
